Closure of Pakenham will result in more weaners heading to Yea in January

The closure of the Pakenham saleyards could have a marked effect on Yea's annual weaner sales early in the new year, with more cattle expected from the Yarra Valley.

But while cattle, which would usually go to Pakenham, may end up at Yea, another agent said mixed seasonal conditions meant some weaners had been turned off early.

Elders Yea territory sales manager Jamie Quinlan said due to an increase in some local herds, the sale would be split over two days - Wednesday, January 15 and Friday, January 17.

"It's planned to yard 2600 head on the first day and between 3500-3600 on Friday," Mr Quinlan said.
